Porsche 944 Cage Projects

Hanksville Hot Rods is proud to sponsor the Rocky Mountain Region’s 944 Spec class, and is a big supporter of the national 944 Spec program, we have designed a very tight-fitting cage and have installed cages in many of the Rocky Mountain and Texas region’s 924/944 cars. When you include our great-fitting mail-order cages, we have performed 88 roll bar and cage projects for Porsche 944s, 924s, 951s and 968s!

We have programmed data such as bend angles and locations into our programmable, numerically controlled tube bender. We have also stored other information such as tube lengths and notch depth, so we are able to more efficiently build the cages for the many 944 race cars that racers bring to us. This has enabled us to offer our custom-fitted cages at reasonable prices with great turn-around times.

All of our cages are custom-fitted based on the driver’s seating position and design preferences. Before we begin any cage project, we listen to the customer, discuss various cage design options with them and develop a design that will suit their plans for the car. Our philosophy is to make the cage fit as tightly to the body as possible while still allowing the fabricator to make a 360-degree weld around the tube joints. We want you to be comfortable inside the cage capsule, and to have maximum space for ingress and egress.

All of our cages are built with 2 passenger-side door bars, and we offer optional bars including different door bar designs, dash bars, firewall connectors, rear brace X-bars, tube gussets, and other bars based on customer preferences and sanctioning body rules. The design is up to you - we customize the cage to suit your needs.

We offer this same degree of customization for our mail-order 944 cages. In fact, we believe that ours is the best-fitting 944/924/951/968 cage that can be purchased via mail-order, because our mail-order cages use the same design and fabrication techniques, and fit just as tightly as our custom cages. We also offer a wide variety of optional bars and tube gussets, making ours a fully customizable mail-order cage design. Click here for pricing and options!

Karen's 944 S2

Karen drives her 944 S2 on open track days and in PCA DE events. Wanting to add more safety to the car, and planning to participate in PCA club races, she brought her car to Hanksville Hot Rods for a custom cage and some interior cleanup. After removing the interior (except for the dash and door panels) and stripping the floors down to bare metal, we fabricated the cage from TIG-welded 1.5" x .120" 4130 chrom-moly.

Since Karen still drives her car to and from the track, she asked us to retain the windows and to fit the door bars lower on the forward hoops to allow for easier ingress and egress. Because she did not want to remove the dash, she asked us to fit the dash bar above the dashboard rather than cutting the dash or installing a "knee bar".

We don't often get to work on a 944 as nice as Karen's. We made it even nicer by removing the carpet adhesive and sound insulation, resulting in a fresh, professional appearance. It was great to see Karen enjoying her car during the 2012 season, and we look forward to cheering her on as she begins her club racing career!

Chuck's 944 #913

Chuck has been a huge supporter of Hanksville Hot Rods, and brought his latest 944-Spec car, #913, to us for a cage. This is our RM Region "sponsored racer" cage package, which includes a NASA/PCA/POC/SCCA-legal 6-point cage with a tight-fitting forward hoop design, double Extended-Style door bars with spreaders on the driver-side and two door bars on the passenger-side. As part of this package, we also installed the window net and fabricated a mount for the cutoff switch.

Rick's 968

Ok, so Rick's 968 isn't a 944, and we built a roll bar for it and not a cage. However, the 968 does share the same body platform as the 924/944 cars, and Rick intends to convert his bar into a cage at a later date so we have added it to our 944 page!

Rick is active in DE events with the Porsche Club of America, and wanted to add safety to this track car. He was referred to us by our friend Orrin at Eurosport Ltd., which is a great supporter of Hanksville as well as the regional PCA club.

Since Rick's intended race class requires him to keep the interior of his car intact, we worked around the factory sunroof lining and headliner, as well as the carpet and seat bottom of the car. We needed to modify our usual 944 main hoop design to accommodate the interior, which was no problem thanks to our experience with custom-fitted cages. This 4-point bar was made from 1.5" x .120" DOM tube, which was painted to enhance its appearance.

Todd's 944

Todd, from Autobahn Premier Service, usually works on VWs and Audis. However, after drinking some 944-Spec Kool-aid, he bought a car from Chuck and brought it to Hanksville for a custom cage. We used our 944 "sponsored racer" cage design with Extended-Style door bars on the driver-side, as well as a straight dash bar that Todd requested. After discussing the harness bar height, Todd asked us to install two harness bars to allow an alternate driver of a different height to drive the car. We dubbed the car "Goldilocks" thanks to its blingy gold paint, and much to Todd's chagrin this name has stuck!

We dubbed the car "Goldilocks" thanks to its blingy gold paint, and much to Todd's chagrin this name has stuck!

Todd's 944

Todd, from Autobahn Premier Service, usually works on VWs and Audis. However, after drinking some 944-Spec Kool-aid, he bought a car from Chuck and brought it to Hanksville for a custom cage. 3zero3

Scott at 3zero3 Motorsports brought us two very clean 944s, owned by a father-son race team that wanted to race in the 944-Spec series.

After discussing our 944 cage design and the optional bars that are available for these cars, Scott asked us to build our spec cage with a dash bar and both driver and passenger side Extended-Style door bars that extend fully into the door area. Like all of our cages, this design maximizes driver space and forward visibility through the windshield.

Since we have built over 20 944 cages, we were able to use our CAD designs and programmable bender to build great-fitting, high-quality cages in less than a week per car. This turn-around time is important since it gives customers more time to complete construction of their race cars. We were happy to see these cars at the '09 NASA season opener test-n-tune event at PPIR, and to see these cars join the growing ranks for 944 racers in the Rocky Mountain region!

Shane’s 944

We met Shane at the Pikes Peak International Raceway reopening weekend. He has owned this 944 for several years, using it as a daily driver. After learning about the Spec-944 series, he decided to turn it into a dedicated race car, and asked Hanksville to fabricate his cage.

We discussed our 944 cage designs with Shane, explaining how most of our 944 customers choose to remove the inner door structure on the driver-side, allowing fitment of our "Extended-Style" door bars. These bars extend fully into the door area, fitting close to or actually touching the inner door skin to give the driver as much space as possible. We also discussed our optional dash bar design which fits very close to or touching the firewall to enable re-installation of the dash if the racer so desires.

Shane decided to have us install our 944 cage with these bars. The result, as with all of our 944 projects, is a very tight-fitting cage. Our new 944 cage design has a main hoop that fits very close to or touching the upper corners of the roof, forward hoops that touch the inner structure of the roofline, and a windshield bar that fits up high and forward, keeping the bar as far out of the way of the driver's vision as possible. Our goal with all of our cages is to
provide as much room as possible for the driver, enhancing driver safety and comfort.

Peak Eurosport’s 944

Peak Eurosport provides quality services for European cars, and is very active in local motorsports. Chris, who operates Peak, was building a nice-looking 944 to show off his company's services, and asked us to build a cage for it. Since this car would be used for shows as well as races, the cage had to fit great, be NASA/SCCA/PCA legal, and represent both Peak and Hanksville.

The cage's rear half was based on our standard 944 design, which fits the main hoop very close to or touching the inside corners of the roof. We also used our forward hoop design which fits the bars tightly along the inner roofline and A-pillars, as far from the driver as possible. The windshield bar also fits high and forward.

This cage features our "Extended-Style" door bar design on the driver-side, with the door bars touching the inside of the door skin to maximize driver space.

Patrick’s 944

Patrick has a very clean, well-running 944, with nice paint and a full interior. He asked us to fabricate a cage for his car before attending comp school.

Patrick wanted to keep most of the interior intact, including the interior door panels. So, instead of using our "Extended-Style" door bars, we used straight door bars on the driver-side with slight bends to route them close to the door panels to give Patrick more elbow room. The headliner and interior roof trim were removed to allow close fitment of the halo to the interior roofline. Since Patrick plans to only race in NASA's 944-Spec class, and does not plan to race in the SCCA's 944 class, he chose to use only one passenger-side door bar.

After fabricating the cage, we welded the window net mounts, painted the cage black, and reinstalled the car's seats.

Alex’s 944

Alex asked us to build a cage for his 944 the week before the NASA Rocky Mountain 2009 season-opener race at the new High Plains Raceway. Given our experience in building over 20 cages for 944s and 924s, we were able to schedule his car with little notice and build a highly customized cage in less than 3 days.

Our great-fitting 944 cage design comes standard with driver-side Extended-Style door bars, which extend fully into the door area for maximum driver space. Using this design as a basis, Alex decided to add optional passenger-side Extended-Style door bars and a dash bar to his cage.

Britain is a racer based in Oregon, and is building a 924S for Lemon competition. Wanting a tight-fitting cage that would accommodate drivers of various sizes, he asked us to build one of our customized, mail-order cages for his car.

This cage is made from 1.5" x. 120" DOM mild steel, and features our great-fitting standard cage design plus optional bars such as an Extended-X-Style driver-side door bars with sheet gussets, X-Style passenger-side door bars, a straight dash bar, rear brace diagonal and Xs, and footwell connectors.

This is a great example of how we can offer a truly customized cage via mail-order, that fits close-to and touching the interior sheetmetal in several points, at a reasonable price.
